a. The armed forces are in ef-
fective control of the country today
after some sharp street fighting.
b. The civil guard, loyal to
the Villeda government, resisted
the army move. Some 120 were killed
or wounded.
c. Army commander Lopez has
assumed office as "head of state."
He may step aside as soon as order
is restored in favor of a civilian
government.
d. President Villeda and the
Liberal Party's presidential candi?
date Rodas, whose election Lopez is
trying to prevent, have been sent
to Costa Rica.
e. Further fighting is in
prospect if Rodas goes through with
his plans to organize a "counter-
revolution." Should he do so, he
will probably get Costa Rican sup-
port.

? a. An air of confusion and un-
certainty still hangs over Rio.
b. The armed forces, which are
far from presenting a united front
in this situation, were yesterday
in a state of full alert./
c. Goulart's weak Wednesday
night speech did little to restore
popular confidence.
d. A group of conservatives
has been angling for his impeachment
by the Chamber of Deputies. We do
not think, however, that the group
can in the near term round up the
votes to bring this off.

uation along the disputed sector of
the Algerian-Moroccan border remains
quiet, but explosive.
d. Similarly, within Algeria

B. USSR-Berlin Moscow is trying to promote some sort
of meeting between West Berlin and East German of-
ficials. They have hinted that it might be possible
for Mayor Brandt to talk to his East Berlin counter-
part about the "human problems" caused by the wall.
The Soviets, of course, would like to see this if
only to underscore the separate status of West Berlin.
