CAMBODIA
Heavy fighting continues near the crossroads
town of Kralanh west of Siem Reap city. An inter-
cepted government message indicates that several
company-sized enemy units are active in the area
and that some intend to destroy a bridge on Route
6 to cut traffic between Kralanh and Sisophon. Two
bridges have already been destroyed east of Kralanh.
The governor of Oddar Meanchey Province has
ordered the evacuation of civilians from Samrong
town following a report that a large enemy force
is nearby. The town is defended by only 450 poorly
armed recruits, and the governor believes they could
not resist for long if attacked. Phnom Penh has
concentrated on the defense of more densely popu-
lated areas nearer the capital, and remote locations
such as Oddar Meanchey are vulnerable to Communist
attack.
Communist forces initiated several more con-
tacts with government units guarding the northern
approaches to Phnom Penh on 10 August. A North Viet-
namese captured on 9 August is reported to have said
he was part of a 30-man squad assigned to create
havoc at a naval base one mile north of the capital.

USSR
The full extent of the outbreak of cholera--
the first reported in the USSR since 1965--
is not yet certain. The Ministry of Health
has announced that the disease has broken
out in Astrakhan and Odessa, but has denied
rumors of travel restrictions in the Crimea
and Caucasus as well as reports that the
cities of Baku and Volgograd are closed to
travelers. Similar outbreaks have been
noted recently in Egypt and Iran, and So-
viet visitors to these countries may have
carried the disease home with them.
In the past, over 40 percent of the out-
breaks of infectious intestinal diseases
in the Soviet Union have occurred in this
same general area; almost all were traced
to contaminated water and poor health prac-
tices. Soviet medical measures should be
capable of insuring that the epidemic is
of fairly short duration.

NOTE
Uruguay: The Tupamaros announced in a communique
late yesterday that the US agricultural specialist
and the Brazilian diplomat are still alive and that
they have not been "sentenced" as yet. Thousands of
soldiers and policemen are combing Montevideo for the
hostages, but have not turned up any trace of the two
men. The Tupamaros say they will kill both if the
hideout is discovered.
