Arab States Kosygin and the other delegation heads spent a rather busy day in New York yesterday conferring with one an- other and getting their? lines straight for today's General Assembly, session. The Soviet press generally main- tains its harsh line against the US and Israel. Unofficially, however, Moscow seems to be probing for US reaction to various elements of a possible Middle East settlement. The internal repercussions of the Arab military defeat continue bubbling ?up in various Arab states. In Egypt, Nasir yesterday took over the top post in his political machine, replacing a man who had apparently become a rival in recent days. Also, a new cabinet is to be announced today. In Syria, the war has altered the precarious balance of political forces and major changes may be in the offing. 50X1 50X1 Declassified in Part - Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2015/07/24 : CIA-RDP79T00936A005200030017-9 Declassified in Part - Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2015/07/24 : CIA-RDP79T00936A005200030017-9 3. Libya . Communist China 5. South Vietnam As for the US Wheelus base, the Libyan prime minister told Ambassador Newsom that it would be quite acceptable if detailed discussions on withdrawal are deferred until August or September. He would like, however, some early pre- liminary, talks that would give the ap- pearance of prompt forward movement. Peking's sixth nuclear test, car- ried out at Lop Nor late on Friday, Washington time, was as expected its largest to date. Political temperatures are already rising in anticipation of next fall's election Ambassador Bunker is very, concerned. He reports that all political elements are aware of what is going on and feel that Ky is getting away with it only be- cause the Americans support him and con- done his tactics. 50X1 50X1 50X1 50X1 50X1 Declassified in Part - Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2015/07/24 : CIA-RDP79T00936A005200030017-9 Declassified in Part - Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2015/07/24 : CIA-RDP79T00936A0052000300171xi 6.
