Arab States - Israel Cairo may be preparing to launch a campaign urging strikes against US inter- ests in the Arab world. Both Egyptian and Syrian domestic broadcasts this morning called on the "Arab masses" to destroy all US and "imperialist" interests in the "Arab homeland." Last night Cairo radio claimed it had proof of US and British participa- tion in the "aggression." Demonstrations have now taken place against US embassies and installations all over the Arab world. 50X1 Arab oil-producing countries, meeting in Baghdad, say they will stop selling oil to any country which takes part in or sup- ports Israel in the fighting. Baghdad radio said this morning that the pumping of Iraqi oil has been stopped "because of US and UK attitudes." In the fighting, Israel has gained an early and perhaps overwhelming victory in the air, but the progress of the war on the ground is unclear. If Israeli claims re- garding damage to Arab combat aircraft are valid, they have destroyed the entire Jor- danian inventory of 21, two thirds of the Syrian inventory of 69, and 250 of some 430 Egyptian planes. ?Arab counterclaims of 158 Israeli planes destroyed seem grossly exaggerated, but actual losses to the Israeli force of about 270 aircraft are not known. Firm information on ground action re- mains sparse. The Israelis claim they have captured the "outer positions" of Kuntilla in ?southeastern Sinai and reached the out- skirts of al-Arish in northern Sinai. In Jordan, King Husayn said this morn- ing that Israel is pushing ahead in a "puni- tive fashion." He ended with a plea that the US intercede. Laos The May issue of Hoc Tap, the North Vietnamese party?jUulial, carries an article that could be read as a sharp (but indirect) attack on Mao Tse- tung and his domestic policies. We do not yet know what is behind this un- precedented step. We are trying to un- ravel this curious matter and will pub- lish on it as soon as possible. Backers of Premier Ky are apparently engaged in a series of political maneu- vers to help Ky's chances for the presi- dency. Two additional roads from North Vietnam are being used to supply Commu- nist forces in northern Laos. Road watch teams report that about 15 trucks a day moved along each of these routes during most of last month. Earlier these roads had rarely been used for trucks. Traffic on Route 7, the normal route to the Plaine des Jarres, has also continued at about 15 trucks daily since early April. All of this activity is probably connected with resupplying the Communist forces before the rainy season sets in this month.
