Mao's propaganda people now claim
that "revolutionary rebels"--Mao's sup-
porters--have seized political authority
in a number of provincial capitals.
There is probably a good measure of
wishful thinking in this.
The regime is beginning to tell
its people that their country is now
able to launch an earth satellite.
This jibes generally with our esti-
mates that Peking may be able to orbit
a satellite weighing up to a few hun-
dred pounds sometime this year.
The 25th anniversary of the Rio
Protocol defining Ecuador's border with
Peru will be observed on Sunday; the
forecast is for violent demonstrations
in Ecuador and the possibility, of a
border clash with Peru.
The presidents of the two coun-
tries are trying to head off an inci-
dent over the highly emotional border
issue, but there is no guarantee that
they can handle the marches and other
commemorative gatherings planned on
both sides. Because some of the wilder
politicians in Quito hold the US respon-
sible for the Protocol, our embassy
there is also getting set for trouble;
Managua is quiet today following
some street shooting last night. The
authorities continue their roundup of
the opposition and there is also a drag-
net out for all Communists. More out-
breaks are likely, either in the capital
or elsewhere.
