North Vietnam 2. South Vietnam 3. Colombia 50X1 Intercepted communications indicate that IL-28 Beagle jet light bombers in North Vietnam are taking more training flights. As many as four bombers at a time may be training together. Antigovernment student demonstra- tions spread to the city of Da Nang to- day. The students, like those in Hue, are protesting government actions and calling for the ouster of-head of state' Thieu. General Thi, the ambitious commander of the 1st Corps in the north, told a US official last week he thought that the' Thieu-Ky government would last Only an-' other month or two. Thi claimed broad popular support for himself, and indi- cated he hoped that Premier Ky would turn to him to take over the government.. The embassy intends to discourage Thi on every possible occasion. The country was quiet over the week- end, but a teachers' strike with nation- wide ramifications is scheduled to be launched today. A local teachers' strike sparked last week's riots. Dominican Republic 5. Greece What caused last night's exchange of fire across the security zone is still obscure. . The embassy's first reaction was that the fighting was initiated by the rebels, but there is some reporting which indicates that a mortar attack from the Imbert lines started the whole thing. At any rate, there are extremists on both sides who are quite capable of doing so in the hopes of upsetting the negotiations for a provisional govern- . ment. 50X1 The negotiations seem to be creep- ing toward ,a solution. At last report, Imbert, finding that his military chiefs endorse the latest proposals, intends to endorse them too. He spoke of.announc- ing this tomorrow. He may move tonight. The King is weighing his next move.: following the failure of Tsirimokos to win a vote of confidence. The King is not likely to be at- tracted to Papandreou's 'proposal which calls for elections in mid-November with a service government running the country in the interim. The King would prefer . a much longer cooling off period before an election takes place in which the mon- archy could be an issue. He may instead try to install a government of nonpolitical technicians or a coalition of all political parties'. Neither would be palatable to Papandreou Considering, however, that the area of possible compromise has been narrowed in the past few weeks, it is possible that the King may choose to play his trump card now rather than later. This would be to turn to the military for a solution. 50X1 Declassified in Part - Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2015/07/24 : CIA-RDP79T00936A003900250001-7 Declassified in Part - Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2015/07/24 : CIA-RDP79T00936A003900250001-7 JAMMU AND KASHMIR AFGHAN. Kashmir 7. South Korea . Indonesia Fighting continues at severalpoints along the cease-fire line in Kashmir,. Indian forces are trying to slice off a Pakistani salient near Uri and have clashed again with Pakistani infiltra- tors in the Vale of Kashmir (see map).. So far, despite an outcry in New Delhi, the Indian response to develop- ments in Kashmir has been limited to. coping with Pakistani infiltrators and attacking their bases and lines of com- munication just across the 'cease-fire line. 50X1 the strong measures em- ployed at the universities last week have aroused strong disfavor among stu- dents. Further demonstrations are bein planned for later in the week 50X1 . Korean security forces are 50X1 braced. The detention last weekend of eight retired generals for antigovernment ac- tivity may cut down the willingness of opposition politicians to incite and fi- nance the students. Some 125 officers and men loyal to Laotian neutralist leader Kong Le have arrived in Djakarta to begin a program of military training under the Indonesian Army. It is clear from the way they were received that indoctrination in anti-West- ern attitudes will form an important Part of the training. The Indonesians have already launched a similar program for some 30 Tanzanian soldiers, hoping to en- list them in Sukarno's struggle against the West. 50X1 Declassified in Part - Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2015/07/24 : CIA-RDP79T00936A003900250001-7 Declassified in Part - Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2015/07/24 : CIA-RDP79T00936A003900250001-7 TOP SECRET TOP SECRET Declassified in Part - Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2015/07/24 : CIA-RDP79T00936A003900250001-7
