DAILY BRIEF
28 AUGUST1965
1. South Vietnam
The ferment against the government
continues in intellectual circles.
Students in Hue reiterated last
evening their determination to press on
with their struggle until the present
government is overthrown and an elected,
civilian one installed. They are send-
? ing representatives to other areas to
develop support for this cause.
A three-day conclave of intellectuals
has been called in Hue, starting tomorrow.
Its sponsors say they hope to keep the
meeting in constructive channels
2. Dominican Republic The Imbert forces are going ahead
with their plans for a mass demonstra-
tion in Santo Domingo tomorrow.
The rebel side is worried by Im-
bert's refusal to sign the revised "Act
of Reconciliation" and by the forth-
coming demonstration. Caamano went on
the air briefly last night to urge his
followers to remain alert.
3. Kashmir
U Thant apparently does not now
plan to move strongly into the Kashmir
situation.
United Nations Under Secretary
Bunche says Thant may merely talk to
Security Council members, urging them
to call on India and Pakistan to "exer-
cise restraint."
According to the latest word from
United Nations observers in Kashmir,
the Pakistanis now hold no posts on the
Indian side of the cease-fire line,
while the Indians hold four posts on
the Pakistani side. The Pakistani com-
mander reportedly threatens to strike
elsewhere in retaliation.

4. Yemen
5. Indonesia
6. Greece
The Yemeni republicans feel that
they have been sold out by the Egyptians,
even though the republican government is
outwardly complying with the terms of
the Favsal-Nasir agreement.
Ambassador Green has concluded that
the two outlying US consulates in Indo-
nesia should remain in place for the
time being. Both consulates have been
subjected to serious hostile demonstra-
tions recently.
The consulate at Surabaya in East
Java is likely to continue to be harassed
heavily. The consul there believes the
odds are that he will be forced to close
by the end of the year.
The consulate in Medan, in north-
western Sumatra, is not as isolated from
local people as is that at Surabaya, and
pressures against it do not seem stronger
now than they'were,six months ago.
Tsirimokos looks like a loser, al-
though the confidence vote has not been
taken yet. ?The pundits in Athens are
now watching for the King's next move.
