1. Nuclear Nuclear reactor KLT-40 is intended for installation on
icebreakers being built in Finland for the Soviet Union. The
reactor unit itself is not secret, but certain of its systems
(steam generator, fuel, control system) are classified TOP SECRET
because the OK-650B and OK-900 reactors used in the Soviet Navy
and on Soviet icebreakers are identical.
2. A long series of Project 627 "LENINSKIY KOMSOMOL"-type
torpedo antiship submarines was built. These submarines had two
water-cooled reactors with a power of 150 MW each, and were built I
in Severodvinsk. The same reactor was installed on submarine
Project 659, which had four pairs of 300-mile-range surface-to-
surface missiles on deck. The missiles had to be fired when the
submarine was surfaced. Several such units were built in
Komsomolsk.
3. Project 671--"ZOLOTAYA RYBKA"--was a high-speed torpedo
submarine with a liquid-metal-cooled reactor. This unit was
supposed to have a high level of automatization which did not
require a large crew. There were no ordinary seamen on the unit,
only career seamen [sverkhsrochniki] and officers. It was built
at the Admiralty Yard in Leningrad. There was an accident involv-
ing this unit and the reactor was replaced by a water-cooled
reactor. Apparently this unit has not been used since.
4. Previously there had been submarines with Project 645
(Project 627, but with liquid-metal-cooled reactors). There had
also been an accident involving one of them, and no more Project
645 submarines were built. There is a new submarine called "AKULA"
which apparently has a liquid-metal-cooled reactor.
