MEMORANDUM FOR: The 8onorable Caspar W. Weinberger
The Secretary of Defense
SUBJECT: Need for Man-portable Weapons Captured by
Israeli Forces in Lebanon
1. '!'his Agency has'a priority requirement for the man-
portable weapons captured by the Israelis during their recent
incursion into Lebanon. Most of these weapons are of Soviet or
Communist Bloc origin which offer particular appiicatian in the
conduct of special activities and unconventional warfare where
friendly forces are primarily dependent on battlefield recovery
for arms resupply.

2. Types of weapons would include, but are not limited to,
those listed in the attachment. These weapons are known to be
in Israeli possession. In addition, any ammunition that may be
acquired to support these weapons or other ordnance items, e.g.,
mines and hand grenades, would greatly assist in the support of
various Agency progra~as.
3. While We recognize our current bargaining position with
the Israelis is very low,'we nevertheless request your assistance
~n"~seizing upon future opportunities in the area of security
assistance and/or intelligence support programs to apply the
leverage necessary to acquire these weapons at little or no cost
to the U.S. Govern~oent.
