2. Nevertheless,. a German advisory staff was formed by the fall of
191x8 from officers recruited in Germany and those enjoying asylum in
Syria. It has-existed in one form or.another since tk}6at time.' Its
first official chief was ex-SS Lt. Colonel Walter RAUFF (Alf), one-
time SD Chief in African and later in Italy from where he was re-
cruited. Ruff's personal entourage consisted mostly of officers
escaped or discharged from Allied M camps in Italy. When Za'im was
finally assassinated, RAUFF and his group departed for South America.
