2.. In the course of the interview, subject stated that he is a former SS
non-commissioned officer and that he. had just returned from Damascus where
he;had served for approximately one year as a First Lieutenant in the Syri-axL
military 'intelligence service along'with Walter RAUFF, former SS Colonel,
who served there in an advisory capacity. Subject stated that he and RAUFF.' Wa!1
did not renew their contracts with the Syrian government because of.diffic
in working with the Syrians and because the Syrian governmental and mili
service is saturated with Connunists.
U. Mention was made to.subject of an article appearing in the September
issue of the.. New York Eexald Tribune?.Paris edition (clipping attached),
concerning the. transfer of German funds from a Swiss.bank to-the Syrian 9
government. The article based upon information from an Israeli government
source, mentioned a Captain Abdullah RAUF.F, former German Gestapo officer,
as a key. figure in the' transaction but also stated that the article was
fantastic. He stated that..the,.RAUFF.mentioned in the article could not
possibly be Walter_RA,IJFF because hey GRUBER., had been closely associated

. Abdullah.as a first. name nor has he ever been in Afghanistan.
12. Subject. stated that in a recent letter received from RAUFF in Italy
the latter. declared his intention of emigrating to South America with his
family in event that it is not possible for him to work for the Americans..
(His family, is' with, him in Italy at vresent.) Subject, however,: advanced
the opinion that RAUFF'would return to the Middle East, probably Egypt,
regardless of whether theAinericans einploy.him.or not, as he has-very good
contacts with the "President". of the Arab League as. well as with the
Egyptian King. Subject stated that RAUFF.lives in Italy under, a. pseudonym
and uses various cover addresses idNaples and Rome, none of which he
would reveal.
13. Subject was extremely desirous of obtaining employment with the American
intelligence service for himself and RAUFFand stated that they could operate.
most effectively in Cairo, Egypt as ~RAUFF speaks Arabic in addition to .several
European languages while. subject himself sneaks most of the Slavic languages.
