Review Panel since publication of the previous issue of the Terrorism Review and
were determined by the Panel to constitute international terrorism. Such incidents
provide the basis for the State Department's Patterns of Global Terrorism, which is
published annually as the US Government's offrcial record of international
terrorism.)

Ethiopia: Unidentified assailants shot and' killed a German botanist near a shop-
ping area called the Taiwan market in Dire Dawa. No one claimed responsibility
for the attack.
Ethiopia: In two separate incidents near the same shopping center in Dire Dawa,
unknown assailants shot and killed a French national and wounded a Yemeni
national
Uganda: Several gunmen attacked a Sudanese refugee camp in Palorinya, West
Moyo, killing 16 Sudanese refugees and wounding five others. The gunmen also
set fire to the refugees' huts. No one claimed responsibility for the attack.~~
France: A bomb placed outside a customs o,~tce building in Bayonne detonated,
causing minor material damage but no in uries. The Basque Fatherland and Lib-
erty {ETA) organization is suspected.
26 October France: Suspected Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) gunmen shot and
killed the organization's international treasurer and a companion in Paris.

personal use.
24 September Peru: Assailants opened fire on a US-owned helicopter during a coca eradica-
. twn mission in Huanuco Department. Three bullets pierced the craft, causing
superficial damage but no injuries. The shooting stopped when the helicopter
returned fire. Sendero Luminoso (SL) is suspected.~~
8 October Venezuela: In Naranjal, presumed National Liberation Army {ELN) guerrillas
burned a lumber factory and two of its vehicles and detonated an explosive
device in the o,,~ce. Guerrillas left a red and black flag bearing the Colombian ELN
inscription at the scene
10 October Venezuela: Suspected ELN guerrillas kidnapped a Venezuelan cattleman at the
border with Colombia. A few hours later the cattleman was found dead in
l.ibertador.~~
26 October Colombia: Leftist rebels attacked a convoy in Meta Department, killing the .
driver of one vehicle and abducting a French geologist and' a Colombian engi-
neer from another. The attackers also stole money from an armored truck in the
convoy, which was traveling to a highway construction site near Villavicencio,
before fleeing with the two hostages. No one claimed responsibility, but authorities
suspect the ELN or the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC)~~

Assailants kidnapped the son of the mayor of Hasankeyf as he drove a fuel tanker
truck between Batman and Hasankeyf on 12 November. It is unknown whether any
ransom demands were issued. No one claimed responsibility~~

ation in Istanbul. No one claimed responsibility for the attack)
United Kingdom Authorities defused an explosive device hidden inside a vehicle in front of police
headquarters in Londonderry, Northern Ireland, on 21 November. The Irish Repub-
lican Army Continuity Council claimed responsibility for placing the bomb
