(b)(3) To it air Concern: This letter of recommendation is written in support of the application of Robert E.T'an for a commission in the United States Navy. . On September 19th of this year I was assigned to duty in charge of the office of Strategic Ser- vices Messae Center. Faced with a job about which I knew nothing and an unknown personnel,, I was enabled to judge without preconception the abilities and qualifications of those then staff- ing;the Message Center. aIthin a few days it became apparent that 14r. Lang stood above the others in ability in han- dling others, in the comprehension and solution of complicated operating and public relations prob- lems, and in reliability. Accordingly, I made Mr. Land, a principal assistant in full charge of oper- ations, subject only to general review and discus- sion on doubtful points. Message Center work requires not only crypto- graphic knowledge of a broad order, but also the possession and application of a considerable deree o education, intelligence and mental ability? In add!- tion, honesty, stability, and the ability to keep one:p a mouth shut are essential, In all the respects mentioned above, and others, I have found Mr. Lang to be outstanding and I there- fore feel confident that he can tackle any job to which he may be assigned by the Navy with credit and success. John W. Delafield lst Lieutenant, F.A, Chief, 05S Message Center APPROVED FOR RELEASED DATE: 19-Aug-2009
