BACKGROUND INFORMATION
A review of the appropriate Office of Security files
relating to Mary Pinchot Meyer is summarized as follows:
NAME � � Mary Pinchot Meyer
DPOB � � 14 October 1920
New York City
FATHER � � Mr. Amos Pinchot, a well-known lawyer
and publicist. She is also the niece
of Gifford Pinchot, former Governor
of Pennsylvania and former head of
United States Forest Service.
EDUCATION : Graduate of Vassar College in 1942.
EMPLOYMENT: Feature writer with United Press.
MARRIAGE : Mary Pinchot and Cord Meyer, Jr., were
married 19 April 1945 in New York City.
Three sons were born of this union,
one of whom was killed in an automo-
bile accident in 1959. Mr. and Mrs.
Meyer were divorced in August 1958.
On 12 October 1964, Mary P. Meyer was shot to death on the
towpath along the C and 0 Canal in Georgetown at 1245 hours.
Friends stated she had walked there often, sometimes in the
company of Mrs. Jacquelyn Kennedy. She was described as a
prominent Georgetown artist and a sister of Mrs. Benjamin
Bradlee, now Executive Editor, Washington Post. She was also
described as a close friend of former President John F. Kennedy.
The slaying was witnessed by a man who said he saw her struggle
with a man. Police' were called and shortly thereafter, a laborer
was arrested in the vicinity and charged with the slaying. The
suspect was subsequently acquitted in the trial and the murder
remains unsolved. Mr. Cord Meyer remarried in 1965.
