comprised an experiment in_hypnosis-designed
to demonstrate potentialities-of-hypnosia'as a tool of the eland-
estine services. Additionally, it,was felt that a stimulation of
the thinking of Operationis-perser:nel in this somewhat virgin
field would prOduce considered and practical guidance upon which -
to base further research.

March - A demonstration was for selected represen-
tatives of Senior Staffs and Area Divisions.
Limb catalepsyi-reproduction df written material
and visualization and verbal description were'
demonstrated.

Discussion:
Ct) -
At all tines_when-subject we_ being hypnotized a CD represen=------
tative (Dr. Gottlieb or Major411110) was present. His presence__
served a double purpose-of reassurance to the subject and observe- -f -
tion of technique for_ possible later exploitation.
It should be emphasized -that fro-the hypnotist's point of
view the entireoperation_was carried -out under the most difficult
conditions. He-had-no previous contact with subjects, hence, no
Initial reppOrtaeXioted. -He had no background knowledge of sub-
ject's from which to-developleadaindicating depth -of trance. It
is am established factthat_trance depth-develops most satisfect- ----
orily if_time_(a few d)-is allowed between-iaterviews. Here-- -
subjects took-part.in four deveIopaertalainterviews within a per =
lad of 48 houra'thus-allowing-very-littlealfialatory time. a -
./\.
Despite the difficulties under which he worked, Mr. lopmt was
able to demonstrate-medium-trance-phenemena-aulte satisfaetorily.
4.)
With respect to techniques used bilz.sx, in suggestibility
testing and hypnosts-,_theamethcAs are _essentially as follows; A _
constant-speed-black on white spiral color he]. was used for
visual fbation along with verbalsuggestiorain initial testing.
With these subjects -demonstrating susceptibility, suggestions were
made that future trance induction would be accomplished on verbal
command to sleep. in-later interviews verbal suggestions and com-
mands were given with a background of metronome beats.
Results:
L-6).
As indicated previouslyAree subjects were chosen for fur-
ther developmenta-7ResultyAth each subject will be treated sep-
arately. Subject A Igasttained a medium trerce state. In the
short time for development-howeveruhe was unable to teach a som-
namibulistic stnte as characterized by amnesia.. In the preliminary.
demonstration subject A A:3monstrated arm catalepsy and hypnotic re-
call of written material. In the final demonstration Subject A de-
monstrated arm paralysis and induced pain as a form of physical and
psychological control.
attained medium trance state and in both de.
monstrations produced under hypnoais a quite accurate copy of
written material previously obserVel. UnfOrturiately both A and
proved_tO:haexcellen.t memories. They were able to mcall
the material quite accurately without-hypnosis-So that little, -
If any, improvement _could be _noticed.
_
Subject C attained medium trance state with a pexticular -
flair for visualisation and verbalization. In the prelim4ari-de-_
monstration reproduceditheilayout-tiLthtirOom observed. noting
additional _features and correcting erfdneous relatiOnships evident
in a previous conscious recounting. Interrelation indicated that
further information as to-detail-could te obtained. In the fine.
demonstration subject-C_was_regressed to the time in 1948 when ha
visited and.asked to describe the scene. Verification,
as accuracy of.the_descriptionitame from an observer who had
ecently_visitedytherCa.!._ It is interesting to note that the_de=-=
scription vas in_termaoUthe 1948 appearanee And did not afli
to extensive-fire-destruCtien:Which occurred later.
Written productions _of subjec ts_are attached in their_orignal
state.
Comments:
Whereas the meriment was-only partially successful in the
light of failure to achieve amnesiac stated and the -lack of marked
improvement in hypnotio_recall;-the-interest aroused among observers
of the demonstration attests toithe-success of one of the Main ob-
jectives.-.stimulation Of_thlT*Ins_in_the operational fields.
