involve the synthesis and pharmacological and clinical evaluation of
compounds of those dhemical families known to have application in the
psychochemicalani "R" fields. During the coming year it is planned
to concentrate more directly on the more practical aspects of the

PROPOSAL I
It is proposed. to continue exploration and pilot
work along lines which have been developed in the
investigations of the past few lears in cooperation
with other projects of interest to the Sponsor. The
primary field of work involves the effects of stress
on human beings. Major items of interest presently
involve the following areas:
(a) Creation at reliable research "tools"
for study of *trees phenomena in animals and
man with the end 132 viev of understalmling these
phenomena to the extent that practical applies,
time can be realized in interpreting and con-
trolling human b.ohaVior.
00 The production and, study of new chemi-
cal and. physical agents of significance in
connection with, the stress reactions.
(a) The allied. mitigation of chemical
and physical agents relatedto the 'State Of
a The particular.
interest in this relationship is to obtain and
define a separation between general 'activation
or depression le animal and the very
specific "perceptual" depression or activation
desirable from the psychologists' point of viev.
A reasonable ammint of progress is being made in
the several areas 'indicated above ad it is expected
that continued efforts of the sort which have proved
efficacious in the past year will yield further
significant results. -

progress hap been made in the area related to stressor compounds
and the relationship of these materials to the physiological pathways
through which both stress and the reaction to it are mediated in
human beings. 'Also, several new and important animal screening technique
adapted to the study of materials which depress the general awareness
of animals without producing any accompanying physical depression have
been made available for work on *knockout" materials: In addition, scam
progress has been made in relating certain organic chemical structures
to observed effects on animals. A considerable part of next year's

effort vill be aimed at extending our ability to understand the structure-
activity relationships among these sleep-producing materials.
