A. Gen PITGVRANOV's Organisation
1. Frontier passes
On or about ll. Mar 56 Lt Col IG JBOKO, announcing himself as from
Gen TARASOV, spoke to Gen PITOVRANOV's Duty Officer (DO). KBOKO
stated that a complaint had been received from Lt Col SAFONOV, Comd,
250 Mil Xdtra, FRANKFURT/Oder, that no specimens existed, at the control
Point, of passes, permitting the bearer to Gross the DDR frontiers,
signed by Gen PI`WVRANOV, Col GOLOVKOV or NIXIFOROV. Gen PITOVRANOV's
deputy replied that bearers of such passes had been travelling on them
for the past two years.

 2. Lt Col IG OBOKO pointed nut that the F` UM-Y flT/Oder Comdt was
newly appointed and was tidying natters up; he was, furthermore,
quite justified in pointing out this omission. KHOBOKO therefore
requested the deputy to transmit his message to Gen ]?IWVRt-NOV
together with the request that appropriate specimens be forwarded.
3. Some personalities in Gen PITOVRANOV's organisation are shown in
Appendix "A".
B. Col SHATAI1)V's Organisation.
On 21 Jan 56 an officer from Col SEIATPJAV's R, also know to
source as a Dept (Otdel), informed a detached officer that a new order
concerning him had been received from AKINOV.

Third (CI) D-17 in GS'r'G. Col. AXEMOV has been
traced by other sources in the GSi'+Gr Polit Dte.
5. POL Supplies
A trace of 4 Feb 56 established that detached officers of Col
SHATA OV's organisation draw POL from the MT Coy at 11'4, BERLIN Garrison.
6, illegal entries to POTEOAix
On 23/24 Mar 56 Maj .IRCLOV, attached to the Indep Garrison Bn at
TELTOW, was asked for details of Russians detained in 1955 and 1956 for
attempting to enter POTSDAM via the 59estern Sector of BERLIN. This in-
formation was apparently required by Col SMATALOV's organisation, and was
later passed by FZOLOV to (Lt) Got SPIVAKOV, who has been traced as
SELVALOV's deputy. NROIAV only had record of four occurrences of such
illegal crossings over this period, not taking into account "3 members of
the ,R,:rbassy" who had been wrongly detained in January or February 1956.

Appendix "B".
C. BERLIN Garrison
6. Reports from Control Points

On 7/9 Feb 56 Maj LOGANOV, cos of SIZON NXO's Bn, and Col P(MAZANOVSKCI,
CoS, BERLIN Garrison, discussed daily reports to be submitted by Control
Points to Garrison HQ. The spea)mrs said that a new order provided for
reports for the previous 2h hours to be submitted by 1000 hours. Previously
Maj LQGANOV said, the reports had been sent in at 1500 hours. The
difficulty was that the Germans only sent in their data at 1200 hours, which
was in accordance with their instructions from "the Gerrwn Directorate".
Reports would not match if the Soviet and East German times did not
synchronise.MAZAhdOVSKII instructed Maj. LOGA.NOV to persist in this
matter and to insist that it was the Germans' duty to comply - "they must
be forced to do soTM Maj IAGANOV than replied that the ierriSlvs finished
the day's work at 1600 hours; they cam- on duty at' 0800 hours and passed,
the necessary data at this time to the Kdtra, but it was 1000?kyj.ws before

 the Kdtra had finished with the data, which did not reach the detachment
until 1200 hours. r-(P,4rlZ.uNOVSICII agreed that he would talk the matter
over with Lt Col KOSfi::.SV, who heads a GS_~G Special Services Dept
element attached to the Soviet Garrison, BAN.

9. . On 3 1--Lir 56 Lt Col KOSTYIJEW informed HQ, GSFG, that the Germans had
been instructed by Col. STOCK, of the German Border Police, to submit
reports, on persons passing and detained at the Control Point, only once
a month. ISUSTYLEV was told that - this -was nonsense and that he must
instruct STOCK to have reports submitted daily.
Comment: Col STOCK is Chief of the DDR BO--der Police (HQ,
AETZ).
10. On 15 Feb 56 Capt KOS. O info ed one ILRIVOKON'1W that reports on
through the Control -Points, and not on vehicles, shop ld be
people passing
submitted. The return of vehicles should go into the quarterly report;
the return of people should be s- ini tted daily.

Garrison, BERLIN.
11. Building Fork at Control Points
A trace of 28. Feb 56 mentioned that vork on huts at Control Points
at DDLIGOW, FAJ 1SKE and ALBERTSHOF had not been completed.
12. A 16 Feb 56 report also mentioned an enquiry whether "the Chief
Foreman" had been at the NOWAWES Control Point.
13. Mines to be sent to BORISOV.
On 27 Feb 56 Sr Lt BORISOV (Tech Off of Lt Col SEZOIv' > O's DO. Spoke
to his battalion and left a mess age for Capt DORO IT to the effect that
DOROKHIN should send the mines to BORISO`T at the 24TO.
Comment: MTO is believed to be an abbreviation for
Material and Technical Supply. Section.
Capt N. A. DOROKHIN is a technical officer
in the 154 Indep Garrison Bn at GROSS

reference by source to the 2 Coy at 1Ol NEUraT-
D)RF, a DDR control point.
16. Teleprinter Equipment for the British
On 23 biar 56 a report was passed from DBEY ITZ Control Point stating
that at 1400 hours that day a lorry had been stopped; it was carrying
equipment for "British H~, BERLIN, Olympia Stadium". Details given were:-

Contents: two complete SU ENS and HAISKE terminal
teleprinter instruments, type Ih7T (MET), with code
receiver and transmitter, factory Nos. 8M45534 and
8M45536.
It was said that the two complete instruments had been declared as spare
parts, which was false. A fine of 1,000 D Marks was therefore
suggested.
17. At sometime on 22/27 Mar 56 this matter was referred to the Soviet
authorities. Capt SRIIQV, an interpreter in Col KOTSUBA's office, was
told about the matter. He was greatly relieved to learn that the hold
up was only because of faulty documentation and that the equipment could
be sent on without Soviet personnel having to interfere.

18. Control Point at BOHt7SDXRF
On 17/18 Mar 56 Lt Col KO; ISS:tRCHUK asked It Col IA r to be at the
Control Point at BOHNSUORF the following day at 1000 liourg. He added-
that excursions left from this point. LOSEV aced for 40 tickets and
an interpreter.

rationalisers (ratsionrlisatory)".
20. New unit at BERLIN-Karlshorst
A conversation on 2t- Feb 56 betvreen Col HLW- IL0V, Chief i oli.t. Off,
BERLIN Corrison, and Lt Cal ALI MOV, HQ, GSFG, revealed that a new unit,
thirty strong, had arrived and was located in the H`i+'.Id fl Karlshorst
compound. There was no indication of its duties or of -its personnel.
21. Gapt ViiUJSHEV and Copt VEIIUID N
shows
A,3report of 29 Feb/2 ISex'56/that Capt YATUSIiEV and CFpt VEIIffi.%N:-

(b) were in HEREIN on a special but unspecified mission of

accommodation. It was also revealed that similar
attachr?ents to the above, from Gen LEGT REP s "outfit",
had. taken place before. _
Corment : Source has traced a Gen MCTE 'T in GS.1r3
associated with artillery matters (August 1955)-
D. Miscellaneous
22. a ;{URUSEIIcN relieved of his post at ROSTOCK
On 30 rear 56 Yx-j lURUSUK1N was ordered to report to Gen 3INEV the
following day. This was the first info ,.tion from source which had
linked I URIJSHXIN directly with the Chief of the 00*, KGB, aS `G. A
subsequent trace, on 6 Apr 56, showed that KURUSFK f was to be relieved
of his post; in the report an officer in HQ, 2 Gam, by nasia WWONIN, (a
subordinate of Can DAN3IYUK)announced that they were finishing with
KURUSHKIN Who was, by order of TSLMV, to hand over to his successor, raj
S'E flUMMJN, by the 12th and be ready to leave on the 17th.(April).
23. . On 10 Apr 56 KJRUSIEMI spoke to Can D.F.N3LYUK at HQ, 2 (km, and
reported that he had handed everything over. He then went on to complain
of his treatment: "I simply do not Iu-aovr the facts", he said. "I have
been told nothing. Cannot some explanation be given? To decide the
fate of a moan and tell him nothing of what it is all about, Comrade
General, is somehow not right. It is all being done in the style of
'blind man' s buff' ".
24.. Further information of 12 Apr 56 showed that KURUSHKIN'was transferred
to CIR'aI 0V, M SR.

25. Security Check
on 21 Feb 5b a conversation took place between a Maj ZAC]H V of HQ,
2 =-, and a certain VOLKOV believed to be at the PCB Third (CI) Dte
at POT3D1:. in the conversation, Z!CHDV reported that his man had
confined his own information. 'ihe man had remembered the approximate
date but not the tine boyond the fact that it was dark. He had most
the individual in question in a corridor. His face had been wet from
rain, or a5.^ybe fror, perspiration, and he had been ti-rearing, a raincoat
and cap. The r,,. -.n had said that he had been in town; he had not stopped
but had passed on.
