27 November 2006 Reference: F-2006-01640 The office of the Information and Privacy Coordinator has received your six letters dated 7 September 2006 requesting records pursuant to the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) for documents concerning: 1. Laos from 1970 to 1999 that mention Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) or Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) removal. 2. Thailand from 1970 to the present that mention Demining and/or Mine Action. 3. Cambodia from 1963 to the present that mention Demining and/or Mine Action. 4. Afghanistan from 1979 to the present that mention Landmines, Unexploded ordnance, and Demining and/or Mine Action. 5. Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1992 to the present that mention Landmines, Unexploded ordnance; and Demining and/or Mine Action. 6. Mozambique from 1975 to the present that mention Landmines, Unexploded ordnance, and Demining and/or Mine Action. For ease of processing we have combined your requests and have assigned your request the reference number above. Please use this number when corresponding so that we can identify it easily. We cannot comply with your request. The CIA, whose primary mission is the collection and analysis of foreign intelligence, has a vast amount of records in a variety of offices and files that are indexed and therefore retrievable under the name of a specific country or region of the world or under a broad subjects of public interest. An overly broad search would locate a vast quantity of records, much of which would be extraneous, mentioning the subject of the request only in passing, thus being of little or no value to (b)(3) (b)(6) APPROVED FOR RELEASE^ DATE: 13-May-2010 you. Further, the review of such records would impose an excessive and unreasonable burden on the Agency, and pursuant to relevant precedent, we must decline to process such requests. However, in an effort to assist you, for each item of your request we searched our database of previously released records that contains copies of documents released over the years to thousands of other FOIA requesters. Searches of this database can be accomplished very expeditiously (since no review is required) and at little or no charge. These records were originally located as a result of previous requests for information concerning various subjects. As a result of this search, please find enclosed computerized listings of documents using the search terms you provided. Please bear in mind that there may be duplicate entries. If you would like to order documents from the enclosed listings, please clearly mark those you want and return the listings to us. Document copies will be provided at a cost of ten cents (US$.10) per page less the first 100 pages to which you are entitled free. Because the page counts on the listings are not always accurate, please do not send payment in advance. We will bill you at the time we provide the documents you choose. At that time, we will ask you to make your check payable to the Treasurer of the United States.- If the information enclosed is not sufficient and you wish to pursue your request further, we recommend that you narrow your time frame and provide more specific information about your topics.
